When I was pregnant with my firstborn over six years ago, like most moms-to-be, I began to question the safety of the foods I was eating and cleaning products I was using. This began a deep dive into ingredient safety, and I was appalled at my findings. For so long, I'd assumed that if products were on store shelves, they had to be safe, right? But I quickly found that I could not have been more wrong!
As I began making swaps to clean products, I fell prey to greenwashing. This is when companies market their products to appear clean and/or eco-friendly. They often include buzzwords like "free & clear" or "paraben free" or even put a cute little leaf on the label to make us think they are more natural products. The unfortunate reality is that most of these products are still toxic.
After I had my first daughter in 2018, I had made many swaps to cleaner products. My makeup was one thing I had continued to turn a blind eye to; I knew the ingredients were unsafe but I refused to flip over any of my products to check the labels. That Naked eye shadow palette had a chokehold on me...anyone else?! Ha!
It wasn't until our newborn photo session that I came to terms with the need to switch. I looked down at my sleeping newborn and saw my foundation had rubbed off all over her swaddle. I finally looked into the ingredients of my cosmetics and knew I had to switch! After researching several make-up companies, I landed on Crunchi as the company with the most stringent ingredient safety standards. With a dash of impulse, a sprinkle of sleep deprivation, and a leap of faith...I enrolled as a Crunchi advocate mainly to score a big discount as I detoxed my makeup bag in one go.
As I dove deeper into my toxin free journey, I grew more and more appalled at the lack of safety standards surrounding all of our products in the US, especially for baby products. I felt compelled to share my knowledge with other moms. I started a little community on Facebook called The Savvy Mom and began sharing information right as I was learning it. This morphed into a beautiful group of women it is today, seeking empowerment on their own clean living journeys, getting safe and effective product recommendations, and sharing encouragement with one another.
